Five Ways To Live More Sustainably
The little choices we make daily can have a big effect on the environment and climate. Let's make those choices positive ones to reduce our environmental footprint and provide a better future for generations to come.
1. Switch to reusables instead of single use plastics
Plastic ends up in our oceans and seals, turtles and other marine animals end up ingesting it or becoming tangled. Switching to a reusable water bottle, ditching single use plastic cutlery and straws and using reusable food wraps (like beeswax wraps) are all small changes we can make to prevent plastic ending up in the ocean.
2. Reduce your meat consumption
The meat production industry is responsible for habitat destruction, overuse of water, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing to cook a couple of vegetarian meals instead of eating meat each week, you can reduce your carbon footprint. Why not challenge yourself to become more creative in the kitchen and cook something vegetarian? As an added bonus, your wallet will also thank you!
3. Recycle where possible
Aluminium cans, plastic bottles and paper products can all be given a second life. Following local recycling guides found on our rubbish bins, can be a great way in ensuring these items are recycled properly. In some states, a 10c refund is offered when glass bottles, plastic bottles and cans are recycled at certain collection points. Why not encourage your kids to collect and recycle these items and put the money in a savings account for them? It's a great way to teach them about the importance of recycling as well as savings!
4. Conserve energy in your home
Reduce energy use in your home by turning lights off when you aren't in the room, unplugging electronics or putting your clothes on a clothes horse or clothesline to dry instead of using a dryer. Investigate renewable energy sources, or contact your energy provider to discuss ways to become more energy efficient.
5. Invest in your wardrobe
Fast fashion is one of the most destructive industries on the planet, responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions. By choosing slow fashion, and investing in pieces you will be able to keep and wear forever (rather than just a season or two), you will be reducing your contribution to the climate crisis. We like to adopt the mentality of 'quality over quantity' - a selection of wardrobe staples that can be worn over and over again is better than cheaper and less durable pieces that have shorter lifespans and end up in landfill.
These are just a few ways we can create better habits that have a direct impact on our beautiful world. Together, we can reduce our environmental footprint and live a more sustainable life by adopting a few small changes to our lifestyles.
